Our story
A family of weavers, and the families we weave with.
Banaras Weaves began in 1987 as a single pit loom in Thatheri Bazaar, a few lanes from the ghats of Varanasi. Our founder's father wove zari borders for other people's shops; we wanted the weavers' names on the label instead.
Today we work directly with 40 weaver families across Varanasi and Kanchipuram. We buy their silk and zari, pay for every saree when it comes off the loom, and never ask for a powerloom shortcut. A single Banarasi takes up to three weeks by hand.
Every silk saree ships with its Silk Mark tag and a card naming the family who wove it.
